002 - On Rhythm, Consistency, and Progress

On finding rhythm, consistency, and bringing side projects back to life.

Hello dear reader!

Welcome to another issue of this newsletter. This week I want to talk about rhythm and making progress. To break up the text, I’ll include some photos from a recent walk around Amsterdam.

In this issue:

  • Side projects
  • Finding rhythm to build

Some of you might remember an issue I published a couple of months ago: Scratching my own itch. In that post I wrote about PostFlow, tool I am building to make my photography sharing workflow easier. A tool that lets a user cross-post on different social media platforms, schedule posts, and more.

This week I started advertising it and opened pre-registration! I’m planning on launching it in early autumn. So, what does this have to do with rhythm?

Today’s issue is a personal reflection of finding my working rhythm to make progress across different projects I try to build — whether professional work, tools, or creative experiments. I’m sure many of you will recognise this: You have an idea, get excited about it, start working for a while… and then, life gets in the way. The idea or project just sits there.

I believe there’s a special graveyard for ideas and abandoned projects. I know I have a few in there myself.

So, I decided to try to break the cycle. Why? Because I want to return to entrepreneurship. I want to build tools and products. I want to start new projects and see them come to life. Both in photography and software. And finding a rhythm to work —alongside everything else— has been key.

I see rhythm as a form of consistency: making sure that every week I dedicate some time. Sometimes it’s just a little, other weeks it’s a sprint. I picture it like cycling through the city: sometimes the bikes move at the same pace, catching all the green lights and avoiding car congestion; other times, the ride slows down because of a flat tire or cars blocking a bike lane… At the end of the day, it’s about keeping the wheels moving. Showing up.

Whether it’s photography or software development, finding that rhythm has helped me to move toward launching side projects and sharing my photography work.

Do you have a project you are working on? Or perhaps projects that have been stranded for a while? I hope this helps as a small reminder to dust off those ideas and keep building.

If this made you think of a friend or family member with side projects, feel free to share this newsletter with them—it might be the nudge they need to keep going. And I’d love to hear from you: what side projects are you building lately? Leave a comment and share.
