012 - Autumn Walks Outside Amsterdam

A reflection on autumn walks outside Amsterdam — on changing colors, natural cycles, and the quiet reminder to step outside and breathe.

Hello dear reader!

Welcome to another issue of this newsletter. This week I want to talk about autumn, and going for a walk. To break up the text, I’ll include some photos from the last weeks walks.

In this issue:

  • Autumn around Amsterdam
  • Walking
  • Photos of trees changing colors

Autumn is here, and in full swing. Trees are changing colors, temperatures have dropped, and the rain has made its return. The light has also shifted from a harsh direct one to something more filtered and warm, giving everything it touches a soft golden tone.

Amsterdam during autumn is beautiful, but today I don’t want to talk about the city. Today is about what lies outside of it. The Netherlands, being a small and flat country, isn’t known for its hikes. Yet, it has some beautiful stretches of forest. They may not be large enough to get lost in, but they have their own quiet charm.

Over the past month, my wife, friends, and I have been visiting some of these forests. West of Amsterdam, just a 30-minute drive away, there are plenty of places to wander, walk, and admire the trees as they turn from green to gold. The photos from this issue were taken in Kroondomein Het Loo, and in Goois Natuurreservaat Spanderswound.

For those who grew up in cold weather watching trees change colors might feel ordinary. But growing up in Mexico, it wasn’t something I saw often — certainly not on this scale. As an adult, I’ve come to deeply appreciate these natural cycles. Seeing how trees and nature transform throughout the year feels grounding and beautiful.

I guess, autumn is for me the yearly reminder about cycles, and to observe the beauty out there. spent part of my youth walking in the mountains with friends. Now, living in a country without mountains, going for walks in nature has been a refreshing reminder of how much I enjoy being outside, breathing fresh air, and feeling the elements.

If you get the chance, go out into nature. Take a walk. And if you feel it, take some photos and share them with me. I would love to see them.

That’s it for today! If you enjoyed this issue, share it with a friend! Know someone that needs a nudge to go out? Send it their way, this might be the push they need.
