## When Amsterdam Turns White

We had snow in Amsterdam. Unexpected snow (for me at least). Last Thursday, as we woke up and opened the curtains, the city was covered in white. Not the typical thin layer, but something more substantial. Enough to transform the cityscape.

Snow in Amsterdam is rare–we get maybe a handful of proper snow days each year. When it arrives, the entire city shifts into a different gear.

It was a perfect opportunity to take out the camera and walk around. Although I didn’t manage to walk too far from home. You know, day job. I took a stroll around Westerpark. It was a perfect break from being at the computer looking at code.

There’s this seasonal joke about what to do in The Netherlands during winter: leave. It’s gray, cold, and rainy. But on occasions like Thursday, it’s beautiful. So beautiful that in the middle of the day, Westerpark was filled with more people than usual, walking and enjoying the snow.

A pop of color!

As I walked and took photos, I kept noticing how people were enjoying the day. Not only walking, but also having random chats between strangers commenting on the weather.

Snow days are for everyone!

One of my favorite moments of the walk, and one that I was able to capture, was a lady showing the snow to a couple of kids in a stroller. They came close to a parked car, and she would make snowballs with the snow from the windshield for the kids to play with, and throw some snow up. Judging by her smile, she was a kid again. That’s how I feel when I’m in the snow too.
