042 - To notice

I spent fifteen minutes looking at one photo, the only one that accompanies this text. On reclaiming the time to notice and letting the mind roam.

For quite some time, I’ve been craving a long do-nothing vacation. One of those where the brain gets bored, and I want to get back to work. Not only because I’m tired, or because I want to lay on the beach and relax. Yes, that’s a big part of it. But, also because I want to reclaim my time to notice. To see the details, and let the mind roam.

I decided to make the space for some free roaming, to notice and to let my brain go to places. I spent the last 15 minutes just looking at one photo. The only photo that accompanies this text.

View through a dark window of a sunlit terrace with a red bistro awning, green trees, and a person in a pink shirt reflected in the glass
The photo I sat with for fifteen minutes.

To notice the details, the textures, even the faces and expressions of the people. To let the brain, the eyes, and the imagination roam, explore and think without external distractions, without the rush of dopamine generated by a changing image, video, or audio that is being pushed to us constantly.

We don’t need permission to look and reclaim our own time. Certainly you don’t need my permission to do it. But we might need encouragement from time to time. To take out that book and get back to it, to look at a photo for 15 minutes straight, to just go out and sit down and observe life pass by, and do nothing, or just be. This might be the encouragement you and I needed. Go do it.
